Country garden design of garden rooms fuses contemporary and traditional elements - near Banbury in Northamptonshire UK
The garden of Northamptonshire Arts and Crafts Vicarage had been neglected for a number of years when I was commissioned. The new owners had done a great job beginning to clear the site and it was obvious that there was a lot of potential for a beautiful english country garden design to be implemented.
The garden entirely surrounds this residence near Banbury in Northants, UK - almost evenly in fact - and so the front garden and sides are as large as the back garden. This makes it an excellent candidate for a modern garden design of garden rooms which reflects traditional garden design elements such as pleached hedges (as can be seen at the nearby Hidcote Garden)
The new English country garden design draws upon traditional Arts and Crafts Garden Design motifs to create a series of spaces, or 'garden rooms' within the landscape. The symettry of the architecture is reflected in the mirroring lily pool in the front garden - a contemplative space enclosed by low hornbeam hedges. A view from the bench within this simple garden space looks towards wide herbaceous borders at the front of the house.
In another part of this Northamtonshire garden design scheme, garden designer Alice Bowe transformed an overgrown area of garden into a sunny vegetable garden that combines productive vegetable and fruit growing with ornamental herbs and topiary in no dig raised beds.
The main back garden area is North facing and steeply sloping: a challenge for any garden designer or garden owner. The sloping site has been cleverly designed to incorporate a grass amphitheatre retained by local stone. This elegant landscape design solution includes planting pockets for swathes of sumptous planting.
This Northamptonshire country garden design was designed in Spring 2008 and Alice is currently working on the colourful planting scheme to accompany it.
