Soil mates : Stipa

From The Times, August 7, 2007

2: With sedum and persicaria: Stipa tenuifolia, Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’ and Persicaria amplexicaulis ‘Rosea’

Mimicking the fluffy nature of the stipa, the elegant wiry spires of persicaria fade out to a smoky pink at the edges, while retaining a deep pink vertical core. The mellow heads of Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’ (aka ‘Autumn Joy’) shout out their presence in the scheme as they break up the swaying grasses with a shade that perfectly matches the core of the persicaria.

Precede with Salvia nemorasa ‘Amethyst’ or whorls of Phlomis tuberosa ‘Amazone’, the smoky pink spires of which hint at the persicaria that will follow.
