Soil mates : Verbena

From The Times, September 29, 2007

How to grow
Verbena bonariensis is simple to grow – from cuttings or from seed – and September is a perfect time of year to take cuttings.

Choose a 15cm piece of the plant that is growing at an angle from the main stem and doesn’t have any flowers. Strip off the lower leaves and pinch out the top, then plant in a half-grit, half-compost mix and overwinter in a greenhouse or cold frame.

Your cuttings should make strong roots over the winter, ready for a spring planting. Just make sure you take them before the first frost.

Suppliers: Verbena is available in garden centres nationwide. It is also easy to grow from seed (from Thompson & Morgan on 01473 688821).
